play ball
Spring means baseball season around here. My son Connor is a junior outfielder on the Free State High School baseball team – and they’ve jumped out to a 6-0 record. That’s very cool for a team that only has 2-3 returning starters from a powerhouse 2008 team.
We have a brand new field this year – it’s all artificial turf – base paths and batter’s boxes included. The only part that is dirt is the pitcher’s mound. It’s pretty darned cool.
Coach Hill was kind enough to let me shoot from the dugout yesterday. Since it was my first game shooting this year – it took a while to get in the swing. Veteran Lawrence Journal World photographer, Richard Gwin, was in the dugout also. We’re both Nikon guys, so we talked shop, shot photos, and I watched him kick my ass getting great shots. It’s fun to shoot next to a real pro.
Connor had another good day at the plate – he went 2-3 with a triple, double and a run scored. Way to go Con! The shot below was taken when he was in the on-deck circle. He was back-lit and the bright sun caught a nice reflection on his new DeRamini bat – now the magic bat. See more baseball photos on the FSHS flickr site.

Very cool shot. I wish Sam was still playing for Free State, it’d be a lot more fun to shoot then the rugby games I’ve been doing.
