I’ve wanted to shoot a rodeo for a very long time. I got that opportunity on a recent photo assignment where I was following the Midwest Living editor and his family on a trip through Kansas. The only bad thing was the rodeo shoot came after a very long day of shooting – and I was sort of beat. I got my second wind once they started the bronc riding. Several of the shot were taken at a very high ISO (5000) since the lighting was crap and I needed the shutter to stop the action. It really is amazing how my rented D700 performed. Guess I’ll have to buy one very soon. Then again, I’m paying college tuition for two kids. It’s good to dream.

  1. Great stuff, Doug! I especially like that first one and the mutton-busting shots are always fun. Was that rodeo in Abilene? I think I recognize the stands from when I shot there a couple of years ago. The evening events were the most fun for me. I like that balance of tungsten against the twilight blue sky like in your first image.

  2. Really like the first one. The D700 is pretty amazing in the dark. If I was a wedding photography (heh, heh, heh) that’s what I’d shoot.

College tuition x2… sooooo glad my boys are all done. Hang in there partner.
