I did this logo mark for Durflinger Homes. When we started the design process, of course, we did all of the traditional hammer, nail, house, etc. marks – but Ron Durflinger didn’t want to go in that direction. He’s a big fan of the Southwest, so we regrouped and did some new looks. This logo mark was inspired by the Southwest spirit bear symbol.

I’ve wanted to shoot a rodeo for a very long time. I got that opportunity on a recent photo assignment where I was following the Midwest Living editor and his family on a trip through Kansas. The only bad thing was the rodeo shoot came after a very long day of shooting – and I was sort of beat. I got my second wind once they started the bronc riding. Several of the shot were taken at a very high ISO (5000) since the lighting was crap and I needed the shutter to stop the action. It really is amazing how my rented D700 performed. Guess I’ll have to buy one very soon. Then again, I’m paying college tuition for two kids. It’s good to dream.

I was at the right place at the right time once again for this cow rainbow shot. I was on a photo assignment following the Midwest Living editor (Greg Philby) and his family on a Kansas vacation. I spent the morning walking 4 miles through waist high prairie grass as Greg’s family and the cowboy family road on horses through the Flint Hills. Later that day my car battery died (go figure). I got a jump from someone at the ranch, then went into Cottonwood Falls to get a new battery. On the way back I decided to head into the Hills a little farther and shoot some of the dark weather clouds. Well, the skies opened up suddenly, the rainbow appeared, and my lone longhorn was smack in the middle of the rainbow. Cool.

See the photo much bigger here.
