My good buddy John Hayden was in Larryville for several days. He got a new Nikon camera recently and he was interested in learning about studio photography. We used fun objects from around my office on white backgrounds. We did do some stuff with strobes – but all of these are tasty natural light from my north facing windows.

Hipstamatic iPhone app

Okay, I might have found the tastiest iPhone photo app yet. It’s called Hipstamatic. The interface is really easy to use and it allows you to select several different combinations of film and lenses. How cool is that? Plus, they have a store with more lenses and film available. I’m going to resist spending more money until I figure out these choices first.

Happy New Year! I think I’ll celebrate with the Powers Irish Whiskey I got as a holiday gift.

Best Camera

I finally got a new iPhone with a “working” camera – so now I can shoot anytime, anywhere. Of course, that doesn’t mean I actually do shoot. I’m a big fan of pro photographer Chase Jarvis – he’s always pushing the limits of technology, photography and the promotion of both. He introduced a new iPhone app called Best Camera and companion website called thebestcamera.com. The iPhone app is cool and easy to use, plus it allows you to upload your iPhone photos to a number a places (email, facebook, flickr, mms). Here are a couple of my early efforts. Like Chase says - the best camera is the one that’s with you.

I’ll be out this weekend shooting senior photos and an autumn color assignment. I was shooting some scenic Lawrence neighborhoods and lucked into a feline friend. Hope the rest of the weekend goes this well.

focus on something

Shooting football is tough. To be a really good football shooter, you have to:

• know the sport (anticipate the action)
• know where to stand (be in best spot to get the action)
• know where not to stand (so you don’t get killed by the action)
• and most important – get the action in focus

The first 3 items came pretty quickly. It’s the last one that’s a little tricky. Sometimes you think you nailed the focus, but after a closer look you see you have a sharp cheerleader and the game-winning catch is a big, fat blur. Damnit. I guess if I shot football 3 times a week, I would get much better much more quickly. But it still drives me crazy.

Here’s an example of a missed focus that actually turned out to be a better photo because I screwed up. The QB crossing for the TD would have been nice, but the receiver’s reaction to the TD tells a better story. Lucky Doug. You can more photos from the Free State High School home opener here.
