Alec Graduation

Seems like yesterday when Alec was born. He came into this world 8 weeks early – but that never stopped him from moving right to the front of the pack. He graduated Friday evening from the KU School of Business with a Master of Accounting. He’s the first one in our family with a graduate degree. I went back to school shortly after Alec was born to get my graduate degree, but I never quite finished. Alec, on the other hand, is a great finisher. He puts his head down, overcomes the hard stuff, and finishes with poise and grace. And I’m so proud of him for that. He hasn’t decided where he wants to begin his career journey, but I know he’ll choose something where he can put his hard working, ethical and compassionate approach to life towards a career that helps people. That’s who Alec is, and I can’t even think of words that describe how proud that makes me as his dad.

Spring Football

Spring football can never come too early for me – and I got the opportunity to see Baker Wildcats scrimmage several times. Connor (#87) had a really great spring, and it looks like he’ll be in the top group of receivers for his junior season. They played much better than I shot photos of them playing. Damn, my sports shooting skills get rusty really fast. Hmmmm, guess I should adopt some sort of off-season training program that includes more shooting and less beer drinking. Or not.

The good news is Baker has all the right parts to be very, very good in the fall. Go Wildcats!

Flint Hills Fire

With all of the spring rain, they have started the Flint Hills burn early this year.

Ranchers burn the Flint Hills of Kansas, repeating natures patterns of fire and growth on the prairie. The grasses evolved to encourage the fires that quickly burn off the old, dry growth and allow the new Spring grass to flourish. The burning also battles the incursion of young trees, the natural enemy of the grasses in their fight for territory.

These images were shot on the Flint Hills Scenic Byway north of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. It’s part of a video/photography project we’re doing the Kansas Byways. It was a spectacular night with no wind and an awesome sunset. I never get tired of wandering through the Flint Hills.

Contrail & Clouds

Contrails are artificial clouds that are the visible trails of condensed water vapor made by the exhaust of aircraft engines. As the hot exhaust gases cool in the surrounding air they may precipitate a cloud of microscopic water droplets or, if the air is cold enough, tiny ice crystals.

The scientific explanation of contrails doesn’t capture how spectacular and sexy they look when fill the afternoon sky. Like they did today. Wow!

I do very few Senior photo shoots. But when my best buddy’s daughter asked me to shoot her portraits – I couldn’t say no. She’s a bright and charming and beautiful young lady. And you should hear her sing. She has a voice that could make her famous someday. And, I’ll get to take pleasure in knowing I photographed her before famous. Follow your dreams Kara.

When the Gizmo guys go on project road trips, we love to make photos and video of our journeys. The stories of making the stories. Keith Walberg and I had some time to kill in Hutchinson, so we stopped by Smith’s Market and the cool, little Carey Park Zoo. I always look for unique characters, and this time they were looking back at me.

Storytelling

I haven’t shot very many live music events. So when Gizmo co-worker Jeff Carson asked me to join his mini documentary crew – of course I said yes. Jeff spent most of the weekend documenting the annual Jam4Dan Benefit Concert at the Celtic Fox. Keith Walberg and I joined the fun on Saturday night. An eclectic line-up of bands and a cozy-small venue made for fun shooting. A friend of mine has a theory that singers are a modern day version of tribal storytellers. So we listen. And we come back for more. She might be right.

Cold beer. Great friends. And loud storytelling. I’ll take that any Saturday night.

Chasing the Clouds

When I got back into photography – I spent a lot of time wandering on dirt roads searching for something to shoot. Anything. But the sky and clouds and horizons were my addiction. And they still are. In the skies I find geometry and conflict and inspiration. Every image is unique – and fleeting. It’s like eating a familiar food, but tasting something new. So, here’s to a new year filled with many more days chasing the clouds.
