When the Gizmo guys go on project road trips, we love to make photos and video of our journeys. The stories of making the stories. Keith Walberg and I had some time to kill in Hutchinson, so we stopped by Smith’s Market and the cool, little Carey Park Zoo. I always look for unique characters, and this time they were looking back at me.

Storytelling

I haven’t shot very many live music events. So when Gizmo co-worker Jeff Carson asked me to join his mini documentary crew – of course I said yes. Jeff spent most of the weekend documenting the annual Jam4Dan Benefit Concert at the Celtic Fox. Keith Walberg and I joined the fun on Saturday night. An eclectic line-up of bands and a cozy-small venue made for fun shooting. A friend of mine has a theory that singers are a modern day version of tribal storytellers. So we listen. And we come back for more. She might be right.

Cold beer. Great friends. And loud storytelling. I’ll take that any Saturday night.

Chasing the Clouds

When I got back into photography – I spent a lot of time wandering on dirt roads searching for something to shoot. Anything. But the sky and clouds and horizons were my addiction. And they still are. In the skies I find geometry and conflict and inspiration. Every image is unique – and fleeting. It’s like eating a familiar food, but tasting something new. So, here’s to a new year filled with many more days chasing the clouds.

I have photographed a lot of cattle, but never a herd coming down main street of a small town. The Kansas 150 Anniversary Cattle Drive went from Caldwell to Ellsworth – nearly 200 miles with a big herd of longhorn cattle. I caught up with the drive at my hometown of Ellinwood, KS. It was a crappy, overcast day – but had a great time shooting and visiting with my family. My dad and Larry Salsbury went along for the ride.

Dear Lawrence

Here’s my bi-yearly “I really suck at blogging” post. So much good stuff to talk about and post about and. . . blah, blah, blah. Okay, I’m done.

I worked on a really cool project recently called Dear Lawrence. It was started by my LJ World photo buddy Nick Krug. It was inspired by a very cool website called dearphotograph.com. I’m pretty darned happy with how my entries turned out, and I got several of them in the Dear Lawrence Exhibition.

Tour of Lawrence

It’s always fun and challenging to shoot the Tour of Lawrence. I decided to shoot the downtown circuit on Sunday afternoon – but was met with rain, humidity and sparse crowds. But I did manage to tweak out several good shots. It was especially fun to see Catherine Walberg race (wife of co-worker Keith Walberg). Since I had grey skies and mucky weather – I took the old-school-look processing on the pics. Good stuff.

Kansas Rocks

I’ve been surprised by some things in Kansas before, but nothing like visiting Monument Rocks and Castle Rock in western Kansas. It’s kind of amazing that I had not been to either place before, but I’ll go back many more times in the future. Monument Rocks is south of Oakley on US Hwy 83, and Castle Rock is 15 miles south of Quinter. These limestone formations were originally formed 80 million years ago. And since the formations are made of soft limestone – they are continually and quickly changing. Another good reason to go back often. My ideal shooting day at either site would be a beautiful, puffy-cloud day that is followed by an awesome thunderhead, lighting storm and then hard rain. The storm would move on quickly and open to an amazing sunset. Perfect. Here are several photos from that trip. The ‘panos’ were shot with my iPhone and a very cool app called “Pano.”
